BYD Dolphin

BYD – Dolphin the electric car that we’ve all been asking for?

I’m not alone in wanting there to be a good range of cheaper, smaller electric cars available to on the market. Currently the market is full of larger premium vehicles that come with a large price tag too. While this has been enough to get a lot of people into EVs the simple truth is that there is a large market of people who can’t and won’t spent £50,000 plus on a car. Whilst there are some options for around £35,000 such as the Renault Zoe and the Peugeot e-208, there is still a large market beneath that price amount. This is where BYD are likely to aim their new model called the Dolphin.

The brand BYD is new to the car market in Europe but is an established name in manufacturing in China making two million cars in 2022 alone. The BYD Dolphin was launched at Fully Charged Farnborough and will be on sale in the summer but how are they making it so cheap? BYD have managed to invest a lot of time and money to control the design and manufacture of their batteries. As such, they have been able to build a revolutionary battery that makes the most of the space to fit more capacity in to the same space and increasing range. Also, these batteries are cobalt free meaning they are more environmentally friendly and have passed strict safety ratings. This has included penetrating the battery case and even then, they won’t catch fire.

What do you get for your money?

The quick specs are:

A quoted range of 265 miles.

Hot hatch levels of performance with 0-60 in 7 seconds.

60 kWh battery pack

100 kW DC fast charging

360 camera

Adaptive cruise control

And much, much more.

Along with the MG4, this car shows that there are starting to be cheaper options available at a good price with plenty of technology on board. Over the next year it will be interesting to see what the European car manufacturers can come up with to compete with the cars that are being produced by Chinese manufacturers.
